Film4 Comes to Bradford: Yorkshire film fans get the chance to watch exceptional films, hear from renowned filmmakers, and attend outdoor screenings

In line with Channel 4’s new major partnership for Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, Film4 is bringing a series of film screenings, premieres, and director Q&As to audiences this summer.

As part of Bradford: A City of Film, Film4 has curated a selection of films with a focus on ‘Great Firsts,’ which will be shown at the National Science and Media Museum’s Pictureville Cinema this Summer. This includes titles from renowned filmmaking talent such as Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna, 2073), Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin, Three Billboards Outside, Ebbing Missouri), and Alex Garland (28 Years Later, Warfare), as well as an exclusive look at BULK, the latest film from Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High Rise). This follows the exclusive preview of Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s directorial debut HOT MILK, starring Emma Mackey and Fiona Shaw, which played in Bradford this June.

Not to mention for the August bank holiday weekend, EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE and SEXY BEAST will be shown at Ilkley Lido, one of the country’s best-preserved art-deco outdoor swimming pools. Both evenings will offer immersive screenings under the stars, with award-winning event producers Wild Rumpus, seeing audiences step into a cinematic wonderland to make it a truly unforgettable summer evening.

UPCOMING SCREENINGS – TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE

Join us for Asif Kapadia’s BAFTA-winning debut THE WARRIOR (2001), screened on 35mm, and an exclusive Q&A with Kapadia himself on Thursday, 10th July. Known for his Academy Award-winning brilliant documentaries, Kapadia is a talent not to be missed.

In THE WARRIOR, which is set in feudal India, Lafcadia (Irrfan Khan) renounces his role as the long-time enforcer for a sadistic local lord and becomes the prey in a murderous hunt through the Himalayan Mountains.

Then on the 18th July, the science-fiction classic and Academy Award-winning EX MACHINA will screen in the Science and Media Museum’s IMAX theatre. Written and directed by Alex Garland, EX MACHINA is an intense psychological thriller played out in a love triangle between two men and a beautiful robot girl.

From award-winning Martin McDonagh, audiences will get a chance to watch the rarely seen Oscar-winning short film SIX SHOOTER on the 25th July.

SIX SHOOTER will be followed by McDonagh’s BAFTA award-winning feature-length debut, IN BRUGES, which will play on 35mm. Hitmen Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) are told to lay low in the historic Flemish city by their London boss, Harry (Ralph Fiennes). Very out of place, the longer they stay, the more surreal their experience becomes, as they find themselves in weird encounters with locals, tourists, violent medieval art, and a potential romance for Ray in the form of Chloë (Clémence Poésy), who may have some dark secrets of her own…

Hot off the film's world premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival, Ben Wheatley’s BULK will play at Pictureville on 16th August. Although not Wheatley’s directorial debut, the film is a return to his homegrown filmmaking roots, and audience members can expect car chases, gunfights, sci-fi, and romance. Wheatley will then participate in an exclusive Q&A alongside Producer Andy Starke.

Following this exciting summer line-up, in Autumn we’ll be hosting a special screening of BAFTA-winning EARTH MAMA. Directed by Savanah Leaf, this is an intimate coming-of-age story of a pregnant single mother who embraces her Bay Area community as she determines the fate of her family.

SUMMER OPEN-AIR CINEMA AT ILKLEY LIDO – TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE

On Friday 22nd August and Saturday 23rd August, you can celebrate the bank holiday weekend with open-air screenings at Ilkley Lido. A buzzy crowd, immersive experiences, and cult and classic films.

The screenings support Bradford: A City of Film, which was born from a partnership between Bradford 2025, the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding) and the National Science and Media Museum, to enable the magic of film to travel to all corners of the Bradford district.

In EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE, director Jonathan Butterell has brought the hit West End show to the cinema. Jamie (Max Harwood) is sixteen and lives on a council estate in Sheffield, but Jamie doesn't quite fit in… Supported by his brilliant, loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies, and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.

On Saturday evening, Jonathan Glazer’s SEXY BEAST, starring Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley, will be screened. This thriller sees ex-villain Gal Dove’s serene life in Spain shattered by the arrival of his gangster nemesis Don Logan.  Desperate not to sacrifice his enchanted existence, Dove is drawn into a shocking and explosive battle of wills with Logan and takes part in a sensational underwater heist, risking everything to protect the woman he loves.
