Matthew Macfadyen joins Rachel Weisz in Tomas Alfredson’s new feature film, Seance On A Wet Afternoon

Principal photography is now underway on Seance On A Wet Afternoon, the new feature film directed by BAFTA Award-winning filmmaker Tomas Alfredson (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Let The Right One In), from a script by Emmy Award-winning writer Jack Thorne (Adolescence, Enola Holmes).

The film stars Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning Matthew Macfadyen (Succession, Deadpool, Death by Lightning) alongside Academy Award-winning actor Rachel Weisz (The Favourite, The Constant Gardener), who co-lead the project.

Based on the novel by Mark McShane, Seance On A Wet Afternoon follows Myra, a self-proclaimed medium who persuades her husband, Billy, to kidnap the son of a wealthy family. Her plan is to assist the police in locating the “missing” child through a séance, thereby legitimising her supposed psychic powers. As Myra’s true intentions begin to surface, Billy realises that her scheme threatens to overwhelm them both.

The film is an Element Pictures and Astral Projection production. Producers are Robyn Slovo, Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures, alongside Polly Stokes and Rachel Weisz for Astral Projection. The project forms part of Astral Projection’s first-look and development deal with Fremantle.

Seance On A Wet Afternoon is financed by Film4 and Fremantle. Executive producers include Jack Thorne, Matthew Macfadyen, Farhana Bhula and David Kimbangi for Film4. FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales, with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance managing domestic rights.

The creative team includes director of photography Marcell Rév (Euphoria), BAFTA Award-winning production designer Jacqueline Abrahams (The Lobster), costume designer Sarah Blenkinsop (All Of Us Strangers), Academy Award-nominated hair and make-up designer Daniel Phillips (Victoria & Abdul), and casting director Jina Jay (The Night Manager).
